A parent's guide to choosing the right Haileybury Pangea VCE single subject: gap analysis, prerequisites, scaling and how the sixth subject question actually works.

Choosing a VCE program is one of the more consequential decisions a Victorian family makes together. Once the core five subjects are settled at school, the question of whether to add a Haileybury Pangea single subject in order to aim for an increased ATAR or contribute to a specific post-school pathway they are seeking, is where a lot of families get stuck. and if so which one, is where a lot of families get stuck. There is no single right answer, but there is a small set of questions that make the answer clearer, and this guide works through them.
Haileybury Pangea offers more than 20 VCE subjects as single subjects, taught live and online, so students at other schools can add one or two subjects on top of their school program. This guide walks through how to work out which single subject fits your child's situation.
Families wanting the practical detail on enrolment, cost and ATAR contribution will find it in our companion guide on how VCE single subjects work.
The first question is honest and specific: what is the student's school unable to offer that the student actually needs?
Typical gaps include:
If none of these apply, a single subject may not be the right move. The strongest use of the pathway is filling a specific gap, not adding subjects for their own sake.
The next question is whether the university pathway the student is aiming at has hard prerequisites or strong recommendations.
If the target degree needs a subject the student's school cannot run, that subject is usually the clearest single-subject choice.
Sometimes the subject that fills the gap is a fifth or sixth subject rather than a straight swap, which brings the ATAR aggregate into the decision: results in a fifth and sixth subject each count for 10 per cent of their scaled value, on top of the student's top four. That only helps if the student can carry the extra load without the top four slipping, so it is worth treating as a separate question from the gap itself rather than an automatic yes.
We go through this decision in full, including when a sixth subject is worth the extra work and when it isn't, in our guide on adding a sixth VCE subject.
A Haileybury Pangea single subject runs as a complete two-year sequence, covering Units 1 and 2 followed by Units 3 and 4, with the student staying enrolled at their existing school for everything else. The subject sits on the VCAA record and contributes to the ATAR exactly as it would if studied at school, through two 50-minute live lessons each week with qualified Haileybury VCE teachers and self-paced work in between.
Every single subject follows the VCAA study design, includes the same school-assessed coursework and finishes with the same external exam as any other VCE student. Study scores are moderated through VTAC's standard scaling and count towards the ATAR in the usual way, taught to the standard that saw 13% of Haileybury's 2025 students reach an ATAR of 95 or above.
