How VCE single subjects work: enrolment, costs and ATAR contribution explained

Haileybury Pangea offers VCE single subjects as a flexible online pathway for motivated Victorian students who need one or two senior subjects beyond school.

For families considering a VCE single subject for their child, the practical questions tend to come quickly. How does the year actually run? What does it cost? How does the subject contribute to the ATAR?

This guide walks through how Haileybury Pangea runs a VCE single subject, how the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) accredits the program and how the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) calculates the contribution to the ATAR. For specific procedural questions, the Haileybury Pangea Admissions team can confirm the detail directly.

How the year is structured

A VCE single subject is a complete Units 3 and 4 sequence. It is the senior, ATAR-counting half of a VCE study, run across one academic year, ending in the same external exam every other Year 12 in Victoria sits.

Haileybury Pangea delivers each single subject through two 50-minute live lessons per week, typically scheduled as one double lesson, supported by self-paced work students complete in their own time. Lessons may sit during the school day or after school hours, depending on the subject and the cohort.

The year follows the VCAA-published study design end to end: the same syllabus, the same school-assessed coursework (SACs) and the same external exam. Students at other schools may take a maximum of one or two single subjects at a time.

When students can begin

Haileybury Pangea runs two intake points each year. Students can begin in Term 1A in mid-November, useful for getting a head start before the formal academic year, or at the start of the academic year in late January. Mid-year entry into a Units 3 and 4 sequence is generally not possible because the assessment cycle is already underway.

How to apply

Single subject enrolment is handled by the Haileybury Pangea Admissions team. A short conversation usually starts the process, with the team mapping options against the student's current subjects and target university course. The Admissions team can be reached on +61 3 9904 6115 or admissionspangea@haileybury.com.au.

The full application then runs through the Haileybury Pangea VCE single subjects page, where families can review the subject list and apply online.

What it costs

Single subject fees are billed per subject per year, and the fee covers the live lessons, teacher contact and assessment for the full year. Because fees are set annually, the Admissions team confirms the current per-subject figure as part of the first conversation, so families have an exact cost before committing.

Two reference points help families weigh options. Virtual School Victoria (VSV) is free for eligible students who cannot access a subject at their school, although the model is largely self-paced rather than live-taught. Private one-on-one tutoring runs into four figures across a year and does not deliver an ATAR-counting subject in its own right. A Haileybury Pangea single subject sits between these two: a paid, fully-taught and ATAR-contributing subject.

How a single subject contributes to your ATAR

A VCE single subject contributes to the ATAR identically to a subject taken at the home school. The mechanism is set by VTAC, regardless of where the teaching happens.

Per VTAC's published method, the aggregate is calculated from the scaled study score in one of English, English Language, Literature or English as an Additional Language, plus the next three highest scaled scores, plus 10 per cent of any fifth and sixth permissible scores. The aggregate is ranked across the state cohort to produce the ATAR.

For a student already taking five subjects at school, a sixth Haileybury Pangea subject contributes at the 10 per cent increment. For a regional student replacing an inaccessible subject, the Haileybury Pangea subject can sit in the primary four and contribute fully. Subjects that scale up under VCAA, including Specialist Mathematics, Chemistry and most Languages, can move the final ATAR meaningfully when the result is strong.

The next step for your family

A VCE single subject is a recognised, accredited pathway for students whose school program is not enough on its own. The structure is straightforward, the ATAR contribution is identical to any other VCE subject and the cost sits well below a full independent school program.
