Amelia’s journey from homeschool to thriving online

NEWS 24 June 2026

Finding the right educational environment for a child can be a journey. For Amelia and her family, that journey led them to Haileybury Pangea, where she joined in Year 5 as one of the initiatory students when the School commenced in 2023.

Prior to enrolling at Haileybury Pangea, Amelia’s education had included time in a local primary school and homeschooling. While each experience offered valuable opportunities, her family was searching for a learning environment that could provide greater structure, a broad curriculum and consistent teacher support.

For Amelia, the transition to online learning was exciting, although initially challenging. The teaching style and classroom environment were quite different from what she had experienced before, however, it was not long before she found her rhythm and routine.

For Amelia’s mother, Danielle, the impact has been significant. “Haileybury Pangea has made a profound difference for Amelia,” she says. “The School has improved her social skills and learning opportunities in a way that is comfortable for her, without her or the teacher having to navigate a class of more than 30 students.”

English, reading and creative writing are among Amelia’s favourite subjects, and she particularly enjoys the variety of engaging topics explored across the curriculum. She also values the smaller class sizes at Haileybury Pangea, which allow students to receive personalised support while building meaningful connections with both their teachers and classmates.

One of Amelia’s proudest achievements has been receiving recognition for her self-paced learning, an important component of the Haileybury Pangea program that encourages students to develop independence, organisation and responsibility for their learning.

Haileybury Pangea Head of Middle School, Tim Christie, says Amelia is a valued member of the Middle School community.

"Amelia is a wonderful contributor to our cohort and enjoys being involved in our Curious Minds clubs and activities,” says Tim. “She is always willing to help other students navigate our learning platforms and generously shares her knowledge and experience.”

"It has been fantastic to watch Amelia grow both academically and personally during her time with us. Her confidence, maturity and willingness to support others have flourished.”

Beyond the virtual classroom, Amelia enjoys the many opportunities to connect with her peers through Haileybury Pangea’s face-to-face events and excursions. Highlights include the much-anticipated Medieval Day on campus and end-of-year gatherings such as visits to the zoo.

The flexibility of online learning also enabled Amelia to continue her education while travelling extensively with her family during 2025. Over six months away, they visited the United States, Canada, Japan, France and England, with Amelia staying fully engaged in her studies throughout the journey.

"I attended most of my classes, except for some that were in the middle of the night because of the time difference,” Amelia says. “I could always watch the recordings the next day, so I never fell behind. My favourite country was England because of the history and the people. If I had the chance, I would do it all again.”

For Danielle, seeing Amelia thrive has reinforced that enrolling at Haileybury Pangea was the right decision.

"Amelia now has the structure, consistency and encouragement from her teachers that was more difficult to achieve through both traditional schooling and homeschooling,” she says.

"Haileybury Pangea is the perfect learning environment for Amelia. It has been the best decision we have made for her education.”
